In addition to performing as a singer-songwriter, Harvey performs under the moniker When Light to improvise ambient and electronic compositions. In the fall of 2022, When Light used synthesizers, analog tape machine, field recording, electric guitars and sampling to compose a 24 hour live installation at Orbit ArtSpace in Fruita, CO. Ink19 writes of When Light, “Harvey uses a variety of sound sources, like recordings and tabletop synthesizers, and sends them through effects that take these signals and scatter them into the time realm. This produces an ever-shifting drone that reveals hidden cadences and fleeting melodies, sometimes blurred to the point that it’s impossible to tell whether what you’re hearing is the signal Harvey is creating or your mind imposing musical order on what is essentially a fractalized overlay of sound.” Most recently, When Light performed The Lithophonic Suites, which are a series of compositions originating from the sounds of stones. The Lithophonic Suites were inspired by, and composed in celebration of, Danny Rosen’s sculpture installation, Suspended Erosion, which opened at Orbit Artspace in March of 2024.
